Hvad er nyt?
(What's new?)
This year, the NE/CO District Convention was held in Omaha, NE on October 5th and 6th. It was hosted by Danish Brotherhood Lodge #1 and Sisterhood Lodge #6, Danner Lodge. We once again drove east across the Colorado and Nebraska plains, Chris, Gitte and I - 9 1/2 hours each way to be specific. We took turns driving and of course we never run out of topics for conversation, so the time went by pretty fast. We checked into our hotel and then headed for dinner next door. A pretty lively place with dancing, pool and loud music - felt like we were back in our more youthful days. Friday morning we took off toward Elk Horn, Nebraska to the ever popular store, "Little Scandinavia". The shop owner, Leonora is starting to recognize us when we show up. We spent several hours perusing all the great items and left with bags full of treasures. Then on to downtown Omaha in search of antique shops. Well they were there at one point and it looks like they are coming back with a major "revamp" of downtown but at this time they are few and far between. We returned to the hotel to pick up our national Rep, Trustee Kim Isager. Then on to an evening with the other Lodges. Great sandwiches and entertainment by comedian, singer and accordion player, Johnny Roger Gomez. Lots of fun with no lack of audience involvement.
The next Morning, we were back at the Vennelyst Hall for a joint Brotherhood and Sisterhood meeting. The guest speaker was John W. Nielsen, Executive Director Emeritus of the Danish American Archive and Library in Blair, Nebraska. An excellent speaker who emphasized the importance of forwarding and preserving any and all items which have to do with the Danish American Immigrant experience to the DAAL. After lunch we had our D.S.S. District meeting. A very productive meeting with a memorial for the Sisters who passed away during the past year and another excellent and passionate presentation this time by National Trustee, Kim Isager. We had a little time after the meeting to shop in a nearby quilt/antique shop and to take Kim to the Scandinavian shop in Elk Horn. Then it was banquet time. Wonderful company, great food, some of us lucked out in the raffle, some walked away with silent auction items and the son of our morning speaker was speaking this evening, John Mark Nielsen, Executive Director of the Danish Immigrant Museum. He spoke of the importance of maintaining and promoting the museum - outreach, the great financial shape it is in, his trip to Denmark and being part of the Centennial Celebration of the Rebild Fest. All very interesting. We concluded the evening back at the hotel with a cup of joe and an after midnight chat. Sunday we headed back east - 9 1/2 hours with new ideas and possibilities for Ellen lodge #21.
