(What's new?)
Emil (Hansen)Nolde 1867-1958 Emil Hansen Nolde was my 2nd Great-Uncle. My fathers, maternal grandmothers brother. Emil was born Emil Hansen on August 7th, 1867. He was born in Nolde, since 1920 it has been part of the municipality of Burkal in Southern Jutland. His parents were Frisian and Danish peasants, they were devout Protestants. Beginning in 1884 he studied woodcarving and illustrating. In 1889 he was accepted into the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany. He studied there for three years. In 1892-1898 he was a drawing instructor at the Museum of Industrial and Applied Arts In St. Gallen Switzerland. In 1898, he left his job to pursue his dream of becoming an independent artist. He married Danish actress, Dana Vilstrup in 1902 and they moved to Germany. It was in that year he began calling himself Emil Nolde, rather than his birth name Emil Hansen. Emil was one of the first Expressionist painters. Expressionists sought to convey an emotional response to what they are painting. Impressionist artists painted as if to capture a scene after you have glanced at it. Emil had an intense preoccupation with flowers.By 1912 he had achieved a certain level of fame and was able to support himself with his art. Emil was a supporter of the National Socialists German Workers Party, Danish Section. He expressed anti-semitic views. Adolf Hitler rejected all forms of modern art. He considered modern art to be “degenerate art “. The Nazis removed 1,052 of his paintings from museums, more than any other artist. After World War 2 he was an esteemed artist once again. He remained married to his wife, they did not have children. He continued to create and died in what is now NeuKirchun in 1958. In recent years,a number of his paintings have sold for the equivalent of several million dollars. His work is exhibited in museums worldwide, including The Guggenheim, the Hermitage and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Please see pictures in the "Photos" section under February Meeting, 2020
