(What's new?)
One hundred and thirty one "years ago, 18 women joined in the formation of Ellen Lodge #21 of the Danish Sisterhood of America. Most of them had come to America in the wave of immigration that peaked during the decade before the charter date, September 3, 1892. Their entry into America was mostly through Castle Gardens on the south tip of Manhattan Island. Economics brought them; there was no rosy future in Denmark. The Denver area was the promised land. Many families were already here as hog ranchers around Commerce City or Broomfield, or truck gardeners in the Platte flood plains, or as small business men in the city. Their bond of heritage, language, the Lutheran Church and the customs gave comfort and support after the hazards and hardships of the voyage from home." This is an excerpt from our Heritage book, "Dedication and Brief History". The charter gathering of Ellen Lodge #21 took place in Dannebro's Hall, 1415 Larimer Street, Denver, Colorado.
On Saturday September 16, 2023, we gathered to celebrate our 131st birthday! Andrea and Ethel arranged a beautiful luncheon at La Loma Mexican Restaurant in Castle Rock, Colorado. As always, it was excellent and hyggeligt company, the food was terrific and the weather and views really could not be beat. What a wonderful day, the Sisters of 1892 would be happy to see that we are still going strong - our bond and commitment to the vision and mission of the Danish Sisterhood persists!
