The Royal House of Denmark once again this year presents a digital Christmas calendar, which offers a yuletide tale about HM The Queen’s handcrafted elves. The focus of the story will be an adventure tour of the Danish line of monarchs, in which the elves, in the company of a Christmas angel, come across traces that Danish kings and queens have left behind through more than 1000 years. The Christmas tale thus involves stories about some of the many majesties who have occupied the Danish throne prior to HM The Queen, and the Christmas calendar’s theme therefore marks at the same time that The Queen will celebrate the 50th anniversary of her accession to the throne in January 2022. This year’s digital Christmas calendar is the sixth of its type. Last year, The Queen’s elves traveled on a tour of the realm to the Faroe Islands and Greenland, and, in previous years, the little elf family has recounted forgotten stories about kings, queens, princes and princesses and taken a Christmas tour through secret, unknown and wonderful corners of the royal palaces all across Denmark. The digital Christmas calendar can be followed each day on the Royal House of Denmark’s social media platforms Facebook and Instagram and on the Royal House of Denmark’s new website, which was launched earlier today. The Christmas calendar’s first door is opened tomorrow, 1 December, at 07:30. A new door in the Digital Royal Christmas Calendar can be opened every day until Christmas. Once you have opened the door you can scroll down and read the text in both Danish and English: Link to the Royal Christmas Calendar: https://www.kongehuset.dk/julekalender-2021/nissefars-julerejse-gennem-kongeraekken You can find the digital calendar on the Royal House of Denmark's Website, Facebook and Instagram. General link to the Royal House of Denmark's website: www.kongehuset.dk Hello Ellen Lodge Sisters,
I went shopping at the Trollheim Christmas Fair today. If there was an award for "best in show" - Ellen Lodge #21 would have won. Many, many wonderful vendors and creations throughout the fair, but Ellen Lodge presented another show stopper! Thanks to Mindy, Gitte and Pia H. for heading up this project - our one and only annual fundraiser. Thanks to all who have participated - creating and shopping, and to Mindy who makes sure the crafters have a roof over our heads. A shout out also needs to go out to Mindy's husband Rich for putting up with us every other week and doing things "behind the scenes" and to Pia H.'s husband, Rene for building a super display panel for all our creations. Thanks to those who worked - sales and networking - this weekend - Mindy, Pia H., Kim, Chris H., and Ethel. If you missed it this weekend, there will be a small selection of items available at the November meeting and the remainder at the Julefest (Christmas party). Pia H. took some pictures - check them out on the "Photos" page. Tusinde tak til alle - a thousand thanks to all! - Pia E. October rolled around and it was time for Ellen Lodge's Birthday Luncheon, 129 years and counting! We had a great time at Virgilios - good food, beautiful decorations and best of all, awesome company. Check out the pictures under the photos tab. I think we have a few more coming of Kim, Tita and myself. Will post as soon as they are in. Then it was our final crafting day. So much fun. Finishing touches and prices applied. Still some things to finish up - our dedicated craft leadership team - Gitte, Mindy and Pia H. - leading us with steady hands - so much talent - and they work long after the rest of us have gone home. Check out the pictures of many of the crafts which have been produced this season. Lots of new items. Make sure you come to the Trollheim Craft Fair - you can get all your Holiday shopping done! Of course, we never miss an opportunity to celebrate milestones - Ethel received her 10 year membership pin AND it was Mindy's birthday. Happy Birthday Mindy. That's it as far as news - for now! Remember, if anyone would like something posted on this website, send it my way and I will post asap. Pia E.
Hello Sisters, I just updated our calendar and posted some pictures from Sisterhood events this month and thought I would write a note to go along. It has been a month where we have been able to see many of our sisters in person and I can't convey in words how much it means to once again have some truly personal contact. So wonderful. We had an in-person, outdoors meeting at Gitte's on September 18th. We welcomed our guest, Majken. A business meeting first as usual and then Andrea gave a presentation on Cornelius S.C. Rødder - this I am also unable to fully describe, please refer to the pictures on this website and the PowerPoint presentation Andrea emailed to you a few days ago to get a full appreciation for the subject matter. Andrea does want to emphasize that this is not her personal heritage but an interesting story she discovered. The question is, do we believe that? That she is not related, I mean ;) So much fun. After the presentation we enjoyed great conversation, ate our lunches and yummy desserts compliments of Gitte.
On the 22nd, we crafted at Mindy's - always a great time as well. Everyone are encouraged to come to the craft sessions, you do NOT have to be a professional crafter to join in, there are always simple things to do and let's face it, it's all about being together and having a good time while trying to enable us to fundraise a bit for the treasury. If you check out the pictures, you will note that I did not get any pictures of us actually crafting but we did - I was caught up in drum making and the camera was forgotten, I will get pictures of some of the amazing crafts Sisters have put together next time. Thanks to Mindy, Pia H. and Gitte for coming up with beautiful crafts, easy to go to directions and having supplies at the ready, to Mindy for always hosting. Please note that the next craft sessions are Ocober 6 and 20 - I hear we need folks to price, so please come join in the fun. The Trollheim Craft Fair is November 5 and 6 - please get ready to shop, shop, shop. I hear food will not be served this time so there is room for more vendors - and they are signed up - they have Covid precautions in place. Sounds like a one-stop shopping opportunity. Well, The sky is blue, the sun is out, it is a beautiful fall day on the mountain so I am headed outside. Hope to see every one of you soon. Pia E Hello Everyone,
We just had a virtual Board Meeting and that turned out really great - thanks Malinda. Guess what - y'all get to participate in a virtual general meeting on Saturday May 15th at 10:30 am. Malinda will send you the link about a week before. And then - drum roll please: The plan is to have a picnic brunch in person on Saturday June 12th. Please see the calendar listing on this website for info and there will be more details to come. See everyone soon! Pia E. Ellen Lodge 21, 2020
The year 2020 has definitely brought many surprises, along with a whole new way of life. Four months ago the term “Social Distancing” wasn’t even on our radar. Now it’s our new normal. I do hope you are all following the recommendations of the medical experts to do your part in keeping you, your family, friends and neighbors safe. Before we had to start limiting our exposure Ellen Lodge was able to have our January Board meeting and our first members meeting in February. That seems so long ago now. A big goal of ours this year was to find community projects we could get involved in, not only monetarily, but also physically. Our new treasurer was also working on a budget for 2020. As so many other things, ideas have been shelved until we meet again. At our February meeting, Sister Lynne McEarchen, gave a very interesting report on Emil (Hansen) Nolde, one of the first Expressionist painters. (Expressionists sought to convey emotional response to the scene they were painting). The most interesting fact is that when Lynne was doing her genealogical research, she discovered that Emil was her 2nd Great Uncle. If you want to know more about Emil, you can find a lot of information online. He led a very interesting life and career. Lynne’s article was included in the May issue of the DS News. Since monthly meetings are impossible right now, our lodge has started a weekly newsletter called “Ellen’s Corner”. It’s one way of keeping connected and to help us get through house confinement. I have taken on the responsibility of collecting everyone’s emails, compiling them and sending them out to all the members. It’s interesting to hear what everyone is doing to get through this unprecedented time. First off was changing vacation plans: cancelling or rescheduling trips. Others are knitting, working on puzzles, heritage, playing games, organizing their house, taking walks, exercising with online apps, arts and crafts……..watching shows on TV: travel, opera, music, art. There’s also a little binge watching of “complete seasons” of favorite TV series. Some of our ladies have been busy making hats for nurses and masks for essential workers, family and friends. It’s amazing to me how quickly local and national news, talk shows, etc., adapted to working from their home without losing a step. We owe so much to them for keeping us informed. But the ones we really need to thank and pray for are those on the front line: medical staff, cleaning staff, grocery workers, mail persons, trash haulers, truck drivers…….. This is such a volatile time right now. Please stay in and stay well. Thoughts and prayers are coming to each and every one of you. Chris Jensen Hix Ellen Lodge 21, President Please see pictures under the "Photos" section Emil (Hansen)Nolde 1867-1958 Emil Hansen Nolde was my 2nd Great-Uncle. My fathers, maternal grandmothers brother. Emil was born Emil Hansen on August 7th, 1867. He was born in Nolde, since 1920 it has been part of the municipality of Burkal in Southern Jutland. His parents were Frisian and Danish peasants, they were devout Protestants. Beginning in 1884 he studied woodcarving and illustrating. In 1889 he was accepted into the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany. He studied there for three years. In 1892-1898 he was a drawing instructor at the Museum of Industrial and Applied Arts In St. Gallen Switzerland. In 1898, he left his job to pursue his dream of becoming an independent artist. He married Danish actress, Dana Vilstrup in 1902 and they moved to Germany. It was in that year he began calling himself Emil Nolde, rather than his birth name Emil Hansen. Emil was one of the first Expressionist painters. Expressionists sought to convey an emotional response to what they are painting. Impressionist artists painted as if to capture a scene after you have glanced at it. Emil had an intense preoccupation with flowers.By 1912 he had achieved a certain level of fame and was able to support himself with his art. Emil was a supporter of the National Socialists German Workers Party, Danish Section. He expressed anti-semitic views. Adolf Hitler rejected all forms of modern art. He considered modern art to be “degenerate art “. The Nazis removed 1,052 of his paintings from museums, more than any other artist. After World War 2 he was an esteemed artist once again. He remained married to his wife, they did not have children. He continued to create and died in what is now NeuKirchun in 1958. In recent years,a number of his paintings have sold for the equivalent of several million dollars. His work is exhibited in museums worldwide, including The Guggenheim, the Hermitage and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Please see pictures in the "Photos" section under February Meeting, 2020 Ellen Lodge # 21
It has been a very busy three Months for Ellen Lodge. Our very talented and engaged President Gitte Jappe Ross moved to Louisiana a few months ago where she still served as our President for the remainder of the year. Gitte held the responsibility for the crafts we make to sell at Holiday Fairs, but fortunately two of our Sisters, Mindy Brown and Pia Hansen, successfully took over our craft sessions, and proceeded to set up crafts for sale at the District/National Conventions’ Merchant Mall in Omaha, Nebraska. October started with Ellen Lodge’s participation in both the Nebraska/Colorado District Meeting on 2 October and the National Convention from 3-5 October. Our Delegate Joanna Christensen provided an overview of the Lodge’s activities over the last year. A poignant Memorial Service was conducted by Chris Hix and Pia Edgar with assistance from other Lodge members. Sadly, we lost two sisters, Cheryl Sanford and Grethe Jensen. Lodge #90 lost Irene Gnata, Margie Miller, and Sheryl Oliver. The District Bylaws were approved, Meeting closed and the District Officers were installed. That evening a Banquet was held at the Upstream Brewery, attended by 31 members. A great time was had by all. The National Convention started on 3 October with a day for a tour of the Museum of Danish America and the Danish Windmill in Elk Horn, Iowa, followed by a dinner. Some of us did our own tour, that included the Scandinavian Shop in Elkhorn, Nebraska and the Danish Windmill in Elk Horn, Iowa. Sister Linda Brooks represented Ellen Lodge at the convention where changes to the DSS Constitution and By-Laws were accepted or rejected as needed. In addition, Linda was elected as National Treasurer. The convention ended on Saturday night with a banquet and we returned to Colorado on Sunday. On November 1-2 we participated in the Trollheim Craft Fair, as we do annually, where our Holiday Creations were displayed and sold. Combined with the sales at the Convention in Omaha we managed to do very well and were able to support several charities and good causes. The next time we met was our normal Monthly meeting held on 16 November where we needed to vote on Ellen Lodge #21’s Board for 2020. As is normal, we heard the reports from several members and were treated to a wonderful lunch hosted by Lynne McEachern and co-hosted by Glenda Heil and Linda Brooks. Mindy Brown and Pia Hansen brought crafts left from the other endeavors for us so buy. Our last get-together was the Christmas Luncheon held on 14 December. Mindy Brown had graciously offered her beautifully decorated house for the Lunch. It was hosted by Mindy, Pia Hansen. and Joanna Christensen. After mingling, chatting and much laughter we enjoyed a wonderful lunch of Pork Roast with the crackling, brown (candied) potatoes, mashed potatoes, red cabbage, lingonberries, gravy, vegetable platter, cheese platter, and several other vegetables. Wine, tea coffee and water and then the dessert. Ris a la mande with dark cherry sauce, cookies and cakes. Needless to say, nobody went home hungry. We had the usual reading of a funny story and gift exchange. Installation of officers for 2020 took place: Past President – Pia Edgar, President – Chris Jensen Hix, Vice President – Dorthe Brush, Secretary – Andrea Thomsen, Treasurer – Mindy Brown, First Trustee – Malinda Ringo, Second Trustee – Ethel Jergensen Evans, and Third Trustee – shared by Birgitte Jappe Ross and Inge Nagata. The Ellen Lodge #21 Sisters hope you had a wonderful Holiday Season and wish you a terrific New Year. Dorthe Houlby Brush, Ellen Lodge #21 |
